Photoblog is a compound of the words "photo" and "blog."
The use of personal image/photograph galleries have been around for many years, but it was with the emergence of blogging, and the systems that enabled blogging, that people found themselves able to publish images to their website in a chronological order - thus adding a fresh and dynamic approach, as opposed to the static gallery.
Like text-based blogs, entries are usually posted to the photoblog by the author on a regular basis. The resulting posts are usually time stamped and listed in chronological order with the most recent photo (or photos) shown first and on the main page of the photoblog. Older entries are accessed via links that allow a visitor to navigate forward and back, chronologically through a photoblog's images.
Typically, some kind archive is available, often divided by month or category. Most photoblogs also allow visitors to leave comments that are associated with a particular entry. These comments allow a photoblog to establish a community of visitors. Comments usually link back to the commenter's site. This further permits the creation of a loose community with authors and visitors able to access, share and communicate through each others sites.
